26/04/2004: "The Difference"

Sad GirlWhat am I doing that makes a difference in this world? How to find my way? Where is my destiny?

I hear a voice say: "Help others!" But isn't that a convenient substitute: alleviate others' pain so that you don't have to think about your own life?

The truth is: it doesn't matter. Or it does?

On Thursday I participate in a workshop for potential ICRC delegates... I'm curious how they feel about idealism and thoughts of improving the world.

I don't know what the game is... but it's my turn to play.

See, that's exactly the sort of thing that I was thinking when I blew into Geneva four years ago. I was looking to particpate in--or at least see--idealism or the world changing, or at least have my faith restored in the UN, in the NGOs, in everything.

And now I am opening a bakery, so you can imagine how well it went.

I am slowly getting involved locally. We'll see how it goes, and I have not all together abandoned my idea of a better world and participating in it. I just haven't figured it all out yet. I hope that you have much more luck than I did.

help others. help yourself. there is so much one can do.

yes, i believe to help others sometimes offsets concern for one's life. but isn't it worth it?

what do you think?

Good for you! The workshop re ICRC should be very interesting. I hope you are chosen/elected (?) as a delegate.

AND, re: your comment and question "The truth is: it doesn't matter. Or it does?"...

I believe that it matters deeply because we 'decide' that it matters. Otherwise, all is absurdity and madness.

OK, it matters a BIG deal! I know people for whom rescuing stray mice is the most important thing in the world! They even write their will to such rescue organisations.

If you decide it matters...
